Before you restore: evaluate the recovery point

Conceptual broken glass pathway reconstructed toward a trusted recovery environment

A recent backup is a starting point. Check what it contains, what it depends on and whether it supports the service you need.

Start with the service you need

A recovery point is useful only in relation to a business need. Identify the application, records and supporting services required to resume a particular activity. A file share may be recoverable while the application configuration or identity service is still unavailable. Define the workflow first so the validation covers the complete requirement.

Understand the available history

Review the available copies, retention periods and the time each was created. Compare that history with what responders know about the incident, including uncertainty about when access began. The most recent copy is not automatically the right choice. Keep the reasoning behind the selected recovery point visible to the recovery team.

Check completeness and dependencies

Confirm that the necessary data, configuration and application components can be recovered together. Ask whether encryption keys, licences, compatible software versions or provider access are needed. Record missing components before restoration begins. A technically successful job may still leave the business unable to use the information.

Test in a controlled destination

Use an appropriately isolated recovery environment and restrict who can access it. Validate the selected source before introducing it into normal operations. The exact checks depend on the system and the incident. Coordinate with responders so testing supports the investigation and does not overwrite evidence or expose recovery sources to unresolved risk.

Reconcile representative data

Ask the service owner to check meaningful records and transactions. Verify dates, totals and relationships that matter to the workflow. Document missing periods and decide how the business will handle them. Do not treat the ability to open a file as proof that all data is complete or suitable for operational use.

Record the release decision

Capture the source used, checks performed, unresolved gaps and the person who accepts the recovered service. Keep any restrictions and follow-up actions with that record. Validation should support a clear decision about the next stage, rather than produce a general statement that everything is clean.
